Did this never throw up a red flag to her? Also gone was the warm funny relationship she had with her roommate Kate. She couldn't even leave the room Jesse was in without him flipping his lid about not being able to touch her. Someone could not be as crazy stupid and blind as she was. And Ava, good heavens, he apparently screwed her into the realm of brain damage. Jesse goes far beyond anything that's remotely normal or attractive in his obsessive controlling of Ava. It was actually difficult to get through at times. It was like watching a train wreck slowly and painfully. That book had lots of super hot sexual chemistry, and I enjoyed the funny banter in Ava's relationships with her friends. I heavily defended the first book in this series (against the many bad reviews) because I felt like he was relentlessly pursing her because he knew that she wanted him, and she was just too afraid to admit it to herself. I'm not even sure what to say about this book.

The Last Season by Eric Blehm5/8/2023 Highly recommended for all lovers of good mountain literature. Few books will take you closer to the soul of the Sierras. The personal people dramas are not as interesting. One brief spoiler on the plot and the ending, "Nature Always Wins." Overall the book is not as gripping as a Jon Krakauer, but a close second. The coverage of the Search and Rescue is gripping. The commentary on the National Park Service not honoring their summer work force and being slow to implement a more modern communication system is sad but true. The book dwells a bit long in these areas and you would not miss too much by ripping a big chunk out of the middle. Although I have not hiked the JMT I have spent weeks climbing in the back country at both ends of the trail, and this book transported me back to that wild beauty, the Range of Light. As good as he was in the natural environment, Randy was bereft of social skills as a friend or a husband. Few books do such a good job at evoking such a strong sense of place. His unique childhood of growing up in Yosemite Valley with a naturalist for a father prepared him well for this life in the back country. 28 seasons (yes, that is twenty-eight) in the wild country of the John Muir Trail, if that is not love then I do not know what is.Randy Morgenson was a modern-day John Muir, a prophet for treading lightly in the wilderness. As an aside it is also about the story of one ranger, no scratch that, one Back Country Ranger. It is about a love affair with the Sierras.

Jordan peterson 12 rules for life5/8/2023 Winners will have a higher ratio of the hormone serotonin to octopamine, while the ratio in losers will tilt in the opposite direction. Scientists have found that these competitive conflicts will lead to the winners and losers having different chemical balances in their brains. Lobsters, for instance, whether they’re in the ocean or raised in captivity, will aggressively fight over the best and most secure spots for shelter. Pecking orders like this aren’t limited to chickens they occur naturally throughout the animal kingdom. At the bottom were the weakest chickens, with their feathers falling out, who only got to peck at the leftover crumbs. At the top were the healthiest, strongest ones that always got to peck first when the chicken feed came. It comes from the Norwegian zoologist Thorleif Schjelderup-Ebbe, who was studying barnyard chickens in the 1920s when he noticed that there was a clear hierarchy among these birds. You’ve probably heard of the phrase, “the pecking order,” right? But do you know where it originated? |
