A Promise of More by Bronwen Evans5/12/2023 It’s the literary version of a tiny, over-sweet cupcake fun enough to take in, but too sugary and predictable to satisfy in any real way.Ĭatlin and Harlow share the same birthday (so adorable) he is thirty to her twenty-three. The story is an airy cliché, the characters overcome obstacles with unforced ease, each conflict is effortlessly resolved. It’s a fitting finish to your tale in which everything is so sweet, lovely, and darling that the book reads like a naughty version of a 1950’s Disney film. This line evokes a picture perfect happy ending for Harlow Telford, the Duke of Dangerfield, and Lady Caitlin Southall, the woman who dared him. He loved, with a consuming passion, the woman who’d dared the Duke of Dangerfield. I’ll begin this review with the last line of your novella, To Dare the Duke of Dangerfield. Aliens by Alan Dean Foster5/12/2023 Captain Dallas, meanwhile, has a more formal relationship with his crew while at the helm of the Nostromo ship navigator Lambert repeatedly calls Dallas ‘sir’ when responding to orders, emphasising a hierarchy that was only hinted at in the film.Īs the crew prepares to land on LV-426, Foster peppers his prose with detailed descriptions of the stresses the ship undergoes, and the repairs Parker and Brett are making as the planetoid’s atmosphere takes its toll. Parker and Brett patch up the ageing Nostromo while openly voicing their resentment at the officers’ better pay, while the officers are irked by the engineers’ perpetual disgruntlement. Foster establishes the uneasy tensions between the officer class on the bridge – Ripley, Lambert, Kane, Ash and Captain Dallas – and the working class engineers Brett and Parker below decks. Foster eloquently introduces his characters in these opening pages, first among them warrant officer Ripley as the most resourceful and insightful member of these truckers in space.

The collapsing empire review5/11/2023 And, similarly, it is clear that incomplete knowledge can be more dangerous than no knowledge. We are certainly not the first readers to note the parallels between the problems facing The Interdependency in The Collapsing Empire and global climate change in our own world. Although the characters all seemed to speak with a similar voice, their motivations were clear, and the conflicts felt natural. The overaching plot - which has some parallels to Asimov’s Foundation- is expertly constructed and well-paced. The key protagonists are the new Empress of the Interdependency, and the son of a scientist on a distant world whose father has spent decades discovering that the flow is going to collapse. The novel is set in an interstellar empire tied together by limited faster-than-light traderoutes known as ‘the Flow.’ This empire - The Interdependency - has lasted for millennia because of the economic dependence of its member worlds to each other. Based on how fun this book is at times, that consideration is probably warranted.

Nutcracker and mouse king book5/11/2023 Hoffmann's story was re-written by Alexandre Dumas, who lightened the tone somewhat and smoothed out some of the original tale's rougher edges. As the story unfolds, the little girl comes to believe that the Nutcracker - ruler of a fantasy land made of candy and sweets - is really the nephew of her doting Godfather cursed to exist in a wooden form until he is set free by true love. Hoffmann, and featured the story of a young girl who finds herself caught in a battle between a wooden nutcracker and a seven-headed Mouse King. "Nutcracker was very pale, but he beamed so ruefully and amiably that his smile shot right through her heart."īased on folk tales from Bohemia, Poland and Muscovy, the original fairy tale "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King" was written over 200 years ago in 1816 by Prussian author E.T.A.

The raj quartet5/11/2023 The series starts, in the first book, with the triangular relationship between a British woman, Daphne Mannering, an Indian man who was educated in England, Hari Kumar, and a British police officer, Ronald Merrick. There is also, actually, a Booker Prize winning 5th novel, which isn’t part of the quartet, but which is nominally attached to the first four books and which focuses on a married couple who stay in India after independence, called Staying On. The total length of the quartet is in the neighborhood of 2000 pages. I think they may be a tie-in for the 1984 BBC television series which I have not seen) from a UBS in 2013. I bought the four matching fat paperbacks (not the editions I used for the review information – mine all have the same cover and they are pretty ugly, actually. When I pulled the first book, A Jewel in the Crown, off of my TBR cart to begin reading, I found the receipt from my purchase of the quartet. I started this quartet of books on May 9 and finished the fourth book, A Division of the Spoils, two months later on July 9. Against the backdrop of the violent partition of India and Pakistan, A Division of the Spoils illuminates one last bittersweet romance, revealing the divided loyalties of the British as they flee, retreat from, or cling to India. After exploiting India's divisions for years, the British depart in such haste that no one is prepared for the Hindu-Muslim riots of 1947.
